California family found alive after pirate attack in the Amazon

A California family has been found alive after they escaped a pirate attack while traveling in South America.

Adam and Emily Harteau, along with their two young daughters, had been on a boat in the Amazon River delta heading to Breves when the gunmen boarded the boat.

It’s not clear how the family escaped but family friend, Colby Guillroy, says he thinks they jumped overboard. Guillroy said, “knowing Adam, he probably took it upon himself to save his family.”

The attack came as the family was heading back home to California to be closer to family.

The couple had been documenting their journey down south via their website, Our Open Road.

They wrote: “Our Open Road will serve as a modern family portrait, as they shed their robes of comfort to reexamine the American Dream.”

The family had been traveling in South America since 2012.
