Devastated parents of New York City terror attack victim: 'This feels like 9/11 for us'

The devastated parents of Darren Drake, a 32-year-old man who was mowed down while riding his bicycle in New York City during Tuesday's terror attack, have spoken out in wake of their son's tragic death.

Drake's mother, Barbra, told the New York Post that her son had purchased a CitiBike membership in an effort to get in better shape following a bariatric surgery that helped him lose 93 pounds.

She said that during work breaks, Drake would ride one of the sharable bikes as a way to avoid drinking coffee or smoking cigarettes.

"He was riding his bike in between meetings — I guess he was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Barbra Drake, 69, told the outlet.

Drake's parents learned about the attack while driving in New Jersey on Tuesday and, after failing to get in contact with their son, headed into the city around 7 p.m. to look for him, according to NJ.com.

After getting in touch with officials, they ended up locating his body in a Manhattan morgue.

The couple says they learned that their son was wearing earphones and listening to the audiobook "1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus" when he was hit.

"I hope he was traveling south and he never saw what was coming. He had bruises on his face from where he hit the pavement," his mother told the New York Post.

His 73-year-old father, Jimmy Drake, said Darren, whom he called the "perfect son," lived at home and that the family had dinner together every night, often discussing politics.

“This kid was so smart, if you compared his brain and mine, it’s like Homer and Lisa Simpson," his weeping father recalled. "This feels like 9/11 for us."
