White House on firing Mueller amid Russia investigation: 'No intention or plan to make any changes'

The White House said on Monday that President Trump has “no intention or plan to make any changes in regards to the special counsel.”

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made the comment during a briefing after she was asked about the first indictments resulting from special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russia’s election meddling.

“The President said last week…and I’ve said it several times before, there is no intention or plan to make any changes in regards to the special counsel,” Sanders responded. “We’ve been saying from day one there has been no evidence of Trump-Russia collusion, and nothing in the indictment today changes that at all.”

Her comments echo those President Trump made two weeks ago when he said, “…there has been absolutely no collusion. It’s been stated that they have no collusion. [Mueller and his team] ought to get to the end of it because I think the American public is sick of it.”

When a reporter asked if he was considering firing Mueller, Trump noted, “No, not at all.”

Meanwhile, the same day Sanders reiterated the White House’s position, Trump’s lawyer, Jay Sekulow appeared on CNN and told Wolf Blitzer, “The president…is not interfering with special counsel Mueller’s position. He’s not firing the special counsel, he’s said that before.”

There has been renewed speculation about Mueller and his investigation after indictments for former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and his associate Richard Gates were announced on Monday.
