Washington D.C. is frighteningly cool in infrared photos

Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to embrace the holiday then unearthing the unseen spookiness lurking in front of our very eyes?

Infrared photography lets us see the world in a way that is not visible to the naked eye. We experience infrared light every day. If you enjoy soaking up the sun or being warmed by a campfire, you are coming in contact with infrared light, according to the University of Chicago. We cannot see infrared light without assistance due to the wavelength being much wider than visible light.

Infrared light can be seen when captured by an infrared camera, and the results can be quite eerie. In the photos taken below, Washington D.C. is transformed from our nation's capital to a far-off dystopian planet.
