CUNY student gets 30 days in jail for Trump Tower bayonet stunt

A 19-year-old CUNY student who brought a bayonet and a bagful of suspicious items to Trump Tower late last year was found guilty of weapons charges Friday.

Alexander Wang was sent straight to jail for a 30-day sentence after his conviction on attempted criminal possession of a weapon, possession of an illegal knife and possession of handcuffs for the Dec. 12 stunt at the Fifth Ave. building that holds the home and offices of Donald Trump, who was then President-elect.

Wang, a Baruch College sophomore, also had a 2-foot-long garrote in his bag that can be used “to go around somebody, wrap it around their neck and to kill them,” Assistant District Attorney Adam Birnbaum argued in summations Friday.

He said a laptop in the bag had downloads “depicting violent videos” including “terrorist acts.” He described it as a “library of sadistic videos.”

The student’s bag also contained a Swiss Army knife, a rope, a flashlight and a water pistol, according to court papers.

He was cleared of charges he had “dangerous” fireworks after Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Steven Statsinger suggested the makeup of the alleged explosives was not proven by prosecutors.

Wang’s lawyer Naila Siddiqui argued he had “no unlawful intent when he entered Trump Tower.”

“If you’re wondering why he had these items, that is doubt,” she said in closing arguments.

Statsinger, who delivered the verdict after a bench trial, said he was troubled by the “lack of judgment that would bring a person into Trump Tower with those items in his backpack.”

“I view this as a case that has a level of seriousness that transcends the level of offenses of conviction,” Statsinger said. “I am deeply concerned about defendant’s acquisition of very dangerous items.”

Wang will be on probation for a year after his release.
