McConnell-aligned group reveals plan to discredit Bannon

The battle between Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Breitbart executive chairman Steve Bannon appears to be intensifying.

"More than a year ahead of the 2018 congressional contests, a super PAC aligned with McConnell revealed plans to attack Bannon personally as it works to protect GOP incumbents facing uphill primary fights," the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

That group, called the Senate Leadership Fund, is said to have plans to target Bannon’s staunch populist leanings and endeavor to tie him to white nationalism in hopes of diminishing his credibility and influence over Republican voters.

CNN reports that Bannon has, in recent times, been working to tear down the existing Republican establishment by backing like-minded Congressional candidates running against those already in office.

He’s apparently already had some success.

In Alabama’s recent special U.S. Senate primary election, Bannon enthusiastically supported candidate Roy Moore while McConnell and President Trump gave their endorsements to Senator Luther Strange, notes Politico.

Moore emerged victorious, but is now facing a rather significant challenge from his opponent, Democrat Doug Jones.

In a recent appearance on Fox News Sunday, McConnell touched upon the chances of Bannon’s candidates actually winning in the long run.

"Some of these folks…are specialists at nominating people who lose, and that isn’t going to help President Trump achieve his agenda," McConnell commented.
