Girl with cerebral palsy faces deportation after undergoing emergency surgery

After her ambulance was stopped at an immigration checkpoint, a 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy faces deportation.

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times says Rosamaria Hernandez will begin her deportation proceeding as soon as she is medically discharged following her gallbladder surgery.

Border Patrol agents stopped the 10-year-old’s ambulance as it was speeding towards the hospital. The agents followed her to the hospital and waited outside the operating room.

An advocate working on Hernandez's case unsuccessfully petitioned to get the agents to release her to family members who are U.S. citizens.

And while the agency does have a duty to enforce immigration law, U.S. immigration policy stipulate that enforcement actions should not occur at sensitive locations like hospitals.

Texas Rep. Henry Cueller said in a statement “...we should be devoting our resources and focus on bigger threats.”
