Despite feuds, Trump declares there's 'great unity in the Republican party'

Despite ongoing feuds with some GOP lawmakers, President Trump has declared that there is “great unity in the Republican Party.”

He made the comment during an exchange with reporters at the White House Wednesday and went on to describe a lunch he had with fellow conservatives the day before as a “lovefest.”

“It was almost a lovefest. Maybe it was a lovefest. But we — standing ovations. There is great unity. If you look at the Democrats with Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, that’s a mess. There’s great unity in the Republican Party," Trump added.

The president had echoed these thoughts on Twitter earlier in the day.

“The meeting with Republican Senators yesterday, outside of Flake and Corker, was a love fest with standing ovations and great ideas for USA!” Trump tweeted.

His post references Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona and Bob Corker of Tennessee who have spoken out against the president since announcing their respective retirements from Congress.

“Reckless, outrageous and undignified behavior has become excused as telling it like it is when it is actually just reckless, outrageous and undignified. And when such behavior emanates from the top of our government, it is something else. It is dangerous to a democracy,” Flake said during an impassioned Senate floor speech Tuesday.

And Corker said about Trump, “He’s obviously not going to rise to the occasion as president.”

In response, the president lashed out at both of them.

“The reason Flake and Corker dropped out of the Senate race is very simple, they had zero chance of being elected," Trump wrote on Twitter. "Now act so hurt & wounded!”
