CNN's Jake Tapper compares President Trump to Joseph McCarthy

CNN’s Jake Tapper is comparing President Trump to a very controversial historical figure.

He sat down with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night and said he was reading a lot about 1950s American politics.

"President Trump and Joe McCarthy are very different historical figures but there is something similar," Tapper said. "And when you read about that era, Joe McCarthy was doing indecent things and lying for years and years with Republicans and Democrats not saying anything."

McCarthy served as a U.S. senator from 1947 to 1957, and was known for his allegations of Communist infiltration in Washington, D.C.

Tapper also compared retiring Republican Senators Jeff Flake and Bob Corker to those few people in the 50s that spoke out against McCarthy.

McCarthy ended up being censured by his Senate colleagues and his career was then -- for the most part -- over.

Tapper told Colbert when it comes to Trump, he "doesn’t know how it all ends."
