12-year-old girl arrested after dousing younger brother with hairspray, setting him on fire

A young girl in Alabama was arrested for allegedly setting her younger brother on fire.

Dothan police were called to the Southeast Alabama Regional Medical Center Friday night after a 10-year-old boy was brought in with severe burns on his back and arms.

The child, whose identity is not being released, was later transferred to UAB Hospital's Trauma and Burn Intensive Care Unit. He's expected to make a full recovery, police said.

According to AL.com, investigators said the boy's 12-year-old sister is responsible for setting him on fire.

Authorities said the girl, whose name is also being withheld, doused her brother's back with hairspray and then used a lighter to ignite the blaze. Police have not said what her motive was.

Investigators told the outlet a third person was home at the time of the incident, but did not say whether that person was an adult.

The girl was reportedly charged with first-degree assault.

"At this time, due to her age, she has been released into her parent's custody and with mandatory guidelines and rules that must be followed by the Alabama Department of Human Resources," investigator James Harvey told the Dothan Eagle. "At a later date she will go before the Houston County Juvenile Courts."
