Trump's tweet linking rise in U.K. crime to 'Radical Islamic terror' backfires

President Trump took to Twitter on Friday to reinforce his message about keeping America safe. However, he is drawing controversy for linking a jump in the United Kingdom’s crime rate to “radical Islamic terror.”

“Just out report: ‘United Kingdom crime rises 13% annually amid spread of Radical Islamic terror.’ Not good, we must keep America safe!” Trump wrote in his tweet.

But the Guardian mentions that while the figures released by the UK Office for National Statistics do show a 13% increase in all crimes, “the report barely mentions terrorism as having any impact on the figures, other than to refer on one occasion to the impact the terror attacks had on the headline murder rate. Thirty-five people were killed in the incidents in London and Manchester.”

Many Twitter users questioned Trump’s assertion.

“Umm, I’m not shy of calling out Islamic terror when relevant, but how is UK crime rate linked to this?” wrote one commenter.

“I’m reading the Trump tweet – in which he connects a crime rise to Islamic terrorism,” another tweeter noted. “There is no evidence to support this.”

“I do wish Trump would not include the UK in his lies to justify his illegal travel ban,” someone else tweeted. “Rise in crime has nothing to do with terrorists.”
