NFL hasn't put Colin Kaepernick on guest list for owners meetings

The NFL won’t say who or how many players will be attending Tuesday’s owners meetings in lower Manhattan to discuss social issues and protests that take place during the national anthem.

But it’s clear who is not on the guest list: Colin Kaepernick.

Even before Kaepernick filed a grievance, claiming collusion, he was likely not on the invitation-only group of players who will join NFLPA boss DeMaurice Smith at the Conrad New York Hotel It’s believed to be the first time anybody from the NFLPA or a large number of players are being included at an owners meeting.

NFL spokesman Joe Lockhart was asked Monday if Kaepernick, who has been living in New York, was asked to attend. “I’m not aware of any consideration” that was given to inviting him.

Instead, Roger Goodell and his staff will be “presenting a plan to use the platform the NFL enjoys to raise awareness on many of these issues and to make progress,” Lockhart said.

Goodell wants the players to stand for the anthem. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said that any of his players who don’t stand for the anthem will not play. The league is trying to move past the anthem issue and concentrate its effort on the social changes that are important to the players.

The anthem issue had begun to fade away this season. In fact, in the second week, fewer than 10 players took a knee. Then, two days before the games on Sunday in week three, President Donald Trump referred to any player who did not stand as a “son of a b---h” who should be fired. That led to league-wide protest.

The NFL is concerned about sponsor and fan backlash and how the protests are hurting business, and it is hoping to come up with a solution that ends the protests and addresses players' social concerns.

The NFL is endorsing the Grassley-Durbin criminal justice reform bill. Goodell and his staff have been meeting with players in New York over the last few weeks — he also went to Philadelphia to meet with some of the Eagles players — about criminal justice reform. The Grassley-Durbin bill has received bipartisan support in Washington and the support of players, led by Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin.

Kaepernick has come under fire for refusing to stand during the Star Spangled Banner in protest of what he complains is oppression of blacks and other peoples of color.
