Unbelievable footage shows postman delivering mail to homes decimated by wildfire

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

This has been the unofficial motto of the United States Postal Service for decades -- and its workers clearly take the creed very seriously.

A drone video captured in Santa Rosa, California, shows a dutiful U.S. Postal Service worker delivering mail to homes that were completely destroyed by raging wildfires that tore through the region this week.

Aerial photographer Douglas Thron was shooting video of Coffey Park, a neighborhood devastated by the recent fires, for NBC’s Today Show when he spotted the clean, white USPS truck among the ruins.

"I did a double take," Thron told SFGATE. "I watched him go to a half dozen mailboxes ... It was like I was seeing something he wasn't seeing."

"It looked like a bomb went off, or someone flew over and bombed the whole area. It looked like a war zone. [The fires] burned everything down to the ground."

Thron told The Mercury News that, although he shoots videos for Discovery Channel, Good Morning America and the Today Show, he has never quite witnessed destruction like this before.

"I’ve covered wildfires and floods before and I’ve never seen anything like it," he admitted. "I'd see areas that were totally fine, but then get to Fountaingrove Inn and The Hilton and see them wiped out. It was unbelievable."

At least 23 people have died while hundreds remain missing as the raging fires continue to sweep through Northern California.

CNN reports that more than 20,000 residents had been ordered to evacuate their homes as of Wednesday.
