Secret Service spent $137,000 to rent golf carts at Trump courses

Renting golf carts at President Trump’s courses in New Jersey and Florida has cost the Secret Service at least $137,505 since he took office.

That includes a $61,960 contract signed Sept. 29 for golf cart use at Trump International Golf Club near Palm Beach, Fla., USA Today reported. The deal runs through late May 2018.

American Bridge, a liberal PAC, flagged the federal purchase order and provided it to the newspaper.

The Secret Service has signed contracts for golf carts since February, but this is the first time one has exceeded $18,000 or lasted more than a month, according to USA Today.

Trump’s critics have chastised him for taking frequent weekend trips to his resorts in Florida and Bedminster, N.J., where the President reportedly golfs on the weekend.

“There's a question about how fast Trump is racking up bills that the taxpayers have to pay, which are largely trips to his hotels and his golf courses,” Harrell Kirstein, American Bridge’s communications director, told USA Today.

Trump is legally barred for paying for anything the Secret Service needs for his protection, the newspaper noted.

His jet-setting ways and the size of his family have drained the agency’s salary and overtime budget, USA Today reported in August.

“The President has a large family, and our responsibility is required in law,” Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles told the newspaper. “I can't change that. I have no flexibility.”

The golf spending goes beyond cart rentals, however.

The Secret Service inked a dealt with Sanitary Solutions for the use of a portable luxury bathroom on Sept. 21, USA Today reported. An Aug. 21 contract with Imperial Restrooms cost $3,300.

When Trump visited Jersey City on Sunday to watch the Presidents Cup, the Secret Service paid $15,600 for the installation and removal of bullet-proof glass so he could watch the tournament.
