Creepy figures spotted on Google Maps view of Finnish field

An unusual, even creepy scene can be spotted on a Google Maps view of a field in Finland, reports The Sun.

While the flat plain may initially appear to be populated with a crowd of colorfully dressed people, it is actually home to nearly a thousand faceless scarecrows.

The figures are part of an art installation called ‘The Silent People’ which is situated in Suomussalmi.

According to the town’s website, the project was initially unveiled in 1988 by artist Reijo Kela, and, after being presented at a few different locations throughout Finland, was settled in its current home in 1994.

“The peat-heads have their clothing attended to twice a year; their heads come straight from the field, their clothes from organised collections," the site also explains. "The Silent People are made and clothed by the Suomussalmi Youth Workshop, which also takes care of their maintenance.”

However, a key element that is not known is the meaning behind the project; Kela has refused to share his own thoughts about it, leaving room for personal interpretations.

That said, some have speculated that the figures may symbolize the casualties suffered during a battle the Finns fought against the Russians nearly 80 years ago.
