Brewers prospect Bubba Derby shielded women during Vegas shooting

In the tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas over the weekend, several heroes emerged as they protected others from the gunfire.

Milwaukee Brewers minor leaguer Bubba Derby was among those, selflessly blocking two young women he had met at the Route 91 Harvest Festival with his own body as bullets rained down, according to a TMZ report.

“I turned and looked at my aunt, who was behind me,” Derby said in a video interview as he recounted the horrifying events of the weekend. “And I remember looking at her eyes and it was that look of, ‘Are we about to die? Is this it for us?’”

Derby, 23, went on to explain that he tried to shield the two young women he had met by covering them with his body, as his brother did the same for his girlfriend.

“You could hear the bullets ricocheting off the ground,” he said.

While Derby was thankful that he and others made it out safely, he still couldn’t shake off the horrible feeling he was left with given the number of deaths and serious injuries.

“It’s tragic, man. It hurts. My heart hurts,” he said “My stomach is constantly turning. It’s part of the feeling of a traumatic experience, the feeling of guilt, of not knowing why you were able to get out alive, get out uninjured.”

Derby concluded by saying that while the deaths and injuries were tragic and horrifying, he did see beautiful acts of heroism, such as bystanders and law enforcement officials rushing back into fire and risking their own lives to protect others.
