Oprah’s tweet fuels 2020 speculation

There is mounting speculation that Oprah Winfrey may be considering running for president after she tweeted an op-ed Thursday which called her “Democrats’ best hope for 2020.”

“Thanks for your VOTE of confidence!” she also included in the note.

The message was addressed to John Podhoretz who wrote the piece for the New York Post Wednesday.

“If any figure in the United States bears watching over the next couple of years as our political culture continues the radical transformation that led to the election of Donald Trump, it’s Oprah," Podhoretz writes. "I believe she’s uniquely positioned, should she wish to commit herself, to seek the Democratic nomination for president and challenge Trump in 2020.”

He later compares the two wealthy celebrities, referring to her as “America’s generous aunt” and him as “America’s crazy uncle.”

Podhoretz also points out that “she made her $3 billion herself and with no controversy. She is, in herself, the embodiment of the American Dream.”

Despite the argument he and others have made, Oprah has rejected the possibility of a future in politics multiple times. “I will never run for public office,” she said during a podcast interview with the Hollywood Reporter in June.

And, after Trump’s victory, she told Bloomberg TV, “I [had] thought, ‘Oh, gee, I don’t have the experience. I don’t know enough. Now, I’m thinking, ‘Oh.’” However, she added, “That won’t be happening.”
