These Canadian rocks may be the oldest known traces of life

Certain rocks may contain the oldest known traces of life. They were found at a sedimentary rock formation in northern Labrador, Canada.

According to researchers, they are 3.95 billion years old. It’s a big deal, because this discovery pushes back the earliest known examples of life on Earth by about 150 to 250 million years.

The discovery has prompted some skepticism, with critics saying the researchers from the University of Tokyo should have done more work to prove the biogenic nature.

According to Gizmodo, before this, the oldest evidence of life was detected in rocks from Greenland. Those were more than 3.7 billion years old.
