Hurricane Maria slammed in Puerto Rico five days ago, leaving the island and its 3 million people 100 percent without electricity.

The Category 4 storm's 115-mph winds and storm surge wreaked havoc on the U.S. territory that was still reeling from Hurricane Irma that hit just days earlier.

Without electricity and limited lines of communication, many residents have fled their homes to shelters.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz predicted on Thursday they will be without electricity for four to six months.
