Koala survives ten mile ride hidden behind the wheel of a car

One little koala just went through a really big adventure! The koala, estimated to be about 6 years old, was luckily found alive after a driver unknowingly drove for about ten miles while the animal clung to the inside of the car’s wheel arch.

Reuters reports it happened September 9th. The driver was in Adelaide, Australia.

According to the nonprofit Fauna Rescue, the driver heard odd noises coming from his car. When he investigated he found her there. When she was rescued, the koala was covered in oil and grease but her injuries were minor.

Representatives from the organization said this is pretty unusual and the fact that the koala was rescued alive is remarkable.

After the koala was examined, the experts found that she had recently given birth. They are still trying to find out where her baby, or joey, is located.

In the meantime, the survivor, named Kelli after one of the firefighters who helped save her, has been released onto private property where she is being cared for.
