Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin requested government jet for honeymoon trip

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin requested the use of a government jet to fly him and his wife, Louise Linton, on their European honeymoon over the summer, a request prompting an "inquiry" with the Treasury Department's Office of Inspector General, according to ABC News.

Per the report, such a request would typically cost approximately $25,000 per hour. In a statement to ABC, a spokesman for the Treasury Department said the secretary put in the request for security reasons.

"The Secretary is a member of the National Security Council and has responsibility for the Office of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence," the spokesman said. "It is imperative that he have access to secure communications, and it is our practice to consider a wide range of options to ensure he has these capabilities during his travel, including the possible use of military aircraft."

The request was put in writing by Mnuchin's office, but Treasury Department officials eventually deemed it "unnecessary."

This is not the first time Mnuchin's requests have been under inquiry. He is currently under review for using a government jet to fly to Kentucky last month, and whether or not he made the trip to watch the solar eclipse with his wife.
