Barack Obama announces Chicago summit for young leaders

Former President Barack Obama has announced his organization will host the first-ever Obama Foundation Summit this upcoming fall, meant to bring together young leaders and cultivate change.

"When I left office in January, I asked of you the same thing I asked of you way back in 2008 -- I asked you to believe not in my ability to bring about change, but in yours," Obama says in the announcement video. "This October, we’re bringing together hundreds of leaders from all around the world for hands on exchange in my hometown."

The two-day event in Chicago will be held at the site of the future Obama presidential center.

"This leadership summit will be a place to gather and learn from one another, and then go back to your communities to lead others in the hard work of change," Obama says. The summit will cover everything from exploring "creative solutions to common problems" to experiencing "civic art, technology and music."

Obama also revealed it will help the Obama Foundation design programs to better support young leaders, as well as connect them with one another.

Former first lady Michelle Obama also shared news of the summit via Instagram on Wednesday.

"I'm so excited about what's coming up at the @ObamaFoundation," Michelle Obama wrote. "These young people have so much to contribute–and the work is only beginning."

The summit is scheduled for October 31 and November 1, 2017, and the foundation has saved some slots for young leaders who can apply to attend.
