Ohio sheriff's deputy shoots news photographer

Sept 5 (Reuters) - An Ohio newspaper photographer was shot on Monday night by a sheriff's deputy who apparently mistook his camera for a weapon, his newspaper reported.

Andy Grimm, a photographer for the New Carlisle News, was out after 10 p.m. local time on Monday to take pictures of lightning when he stopped to photograph a police traffic stop, the newspaper said in a story published on Tuesday. The city is about 20 miles north of Dayton, Ohio.

It said Grimm had pulled into a parking lot and set up his tripod when he turned around and was shot without warning.

"He had his camera and tripod in his hands and Deputy Jake Shaw apparently mistook it for a weapon and fired, striking Andy in the side," the New Carlisle, Ohio, paper reported.

Grimm was rushed to a hospital and is expected to recover, according to the report. Dale Grimm, the publisher of the newspaper and the photographer's father, according to the Dayton Daily News, declined to comment on Tuesday.

Clark County Sheriff Deborah Burchett's office referred questions to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine's office, which is investigating the shooting. Officials with the attorney general's office were not immediately available.

"I know Jake. I like Jake. I don't want him to lose his job over this," Andy Grimm told his newspaper.
