12-year-old stabs student in back at prestigious DC private school

WASHINGTON, DC (WDCW) -- A 13-year-old boy is recovering after he was stabbed in the back by a 12-year-old girl at the British International School of Washington, according to police.

The attack happened around 12:50 pm Tuesday, for reasons unknown as of yet to the public, but police say the girl is not facing any charges right now because of her diplomatic status.

Mohammed Abdalla is a parent who was waiting to pick up his child from school when he learned what had taken place.

“To hear something like this from a school like this is just scary because this is one of the best schools in DC.”, said Abdalla.

During a brief news conference, Inspector M.K. Coligan of the School Safety Division said, “We do not believe that any other students are in danger and the case is under investigation right now. The suspect has been identified, however, because of their diplomatic status, there will be no arrest at this time.”

The British International School teaches Pre-K to 12th grade for many of the children of diplomats in the area.

Principal, Ian Piper says he alerted parents what to happened, saying, “At the moment, the only thing I’ve told the parents is obviously we’ve had an incident here at the school. The student body here are safe and well. We’ve continued with the school day as normal. We’ve spoken with the student body.”

Detectives are still trying to determine what led up to the stabbing, but some parents say this incident is not a cause for concern.

“I’m not concerned, no. My kids go to the school since two years now and I think it’s very safe here, so I’m not worried.”, said Elly Kamp.

The Metropolitan Police is currently working with the DC Attorney General’s Office and the State Department to determine if criminal charges can be filed in the future.
The school principal has said that they are still waiting on word from the police to determine if that student will be expelled.
