11-year-old shoots himself with gun he found at a bus stop

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — Police said a 11-year-old shot himself after finding a loaded gun at a school bus stop.

The child told police he was waiting for the bus across the street from his home in the 1700 block of West Shelby Drive when he spotted the gun on the ground. He was the only child outside waiting when he accidentally shot himself in the hand.

His grandmother drove him to the hospital. Police said the boy shot himself in his right hand, and he is expected to be OK.

Detectives are still trying to figure out where the gun came from.

Police said parents need to teach their kids about gun safety and say they should never pick up a gun they find. Instead, they should tell a parent or an adult about it and call police.
