Study shows people who are 'fat but fit' still risk heart disease

There may be bad news for those who like their morning workout with a side of donuts. No matter how fit you are, being overweight carries some risk of coronary heart disease.

That's according to a study out of the U.K. which looked at existing data for half a million European residents.

Researchers compared that data to 12 years of follow up and classified people as metabolically healthy or unhealthy.

Ok but what is unhealthy?

The Independent reports having 3 or more of a number of metabolic factors such as high blood pressure check, high blood sugar check, low levels of HDL cholesterol or elevated waist circumference.

The study found those in the unhealthy group had more than twice the risk of coronary heart disease compared to the healthy weight group.

And that’s whether they were normal weight overweight or obese.

Those that were healthy and overweight still had 26% more risk.

The takeaway is that fit and fat may not be an actual thing so maybe swap the everyday donut for a fruit smoothie.

Donuts on Sundays of course.
