Serena Williams gives birth to baby girl

Serena Williams gave birth on Friday, welcoming a baby girl into the world with fiancé Alexis Ohanian.

The tennis icon, 35, was reportedly induced on Thursday night at St. Mary's Medical Center in Palm Beach. Her newborn weighs 6 pounds, 13 ounces, according to CBS 12 news producer Chris Shepherd.

"Mom and baby doing well," Shepherd tweeted.

The exciting news broke online just as sister Venus Williams headed into the US Open for an afternoon match. Just before taking the court, she told ESPN, "Obviously I'm super excited. Words can't describe."

This is the first child for both Williams and Reddit co-founder Ohanian. Ohanian, 34, proposed in December 2016, and they announced their pregnancy the following April. In the months since, Williams has documented her pregnancy on Instagram.

Williams told AOL in July that she planned to spend the weeks leading up to her due date at home in Florida -- but even at eight months along, she had plenty on her plate: "I've been taking my time doing a lot of things," she said. "[I'm] working on the nursery ever-so-slowly [because] I don't want to get it done and not have anything else to do. Each week, I have small goals. That's how I've been spending my time. Obviously, I'm still working, and I sit on the board of a company, so I find that my office hours are intense and that keeps me busy."

Outlets including the Daily Mail reported that the entire hospital floor was cleared to ensure maximum privacy for Williams, a 23-time major winner widely considered the greatest tennis player of all time.
