Confederate flags and controversial symbols banned from some North Carolina schools

The Confederate flag, along with other hate symbols, will now be banned in some North Carolina schools.

The Durham County public school board voted unanimously to revise their dress code policy, a decision that stems from the backlash following the Charlottesville, Virginia white supremacist rally.

The school board also voted to remove Confederate war veteran Julian Shakespeare Carr’s name from one of their buildings.

Durham School Board Chairman, Mike Lee told the Herald Sun, “I felt it was really important for us to get specific, called-out examples of the kinds of things that are bubbling up now.”

Other nearby North Carolina school districts have also voted to change their dress code policies following the Charlottesville rally.
