Cape Cod official backs off proposal To kill sharks
A Massachusetts county official is backing off of his proposal to kill great white sharks in the area following a bloody attack on a seal off of Nauset Beach.
Barnstable County Commissioner Ron Beaty made a proposal on Tuesday to kill great white sharks in the area by deploying baited drum lines with hooks near popular beaches.
He stated on Friday that the plan is being placed on "indefinite interim freeze" pending issuance of alternative proposals by other parties and organizations.
The Barnstable County Board of Regional Commissioners had distanced themselves from the plan, stating that the idea was drafted without the knowledge of other board members or county staff.
According to Masslive, Beaty said he hopes the proposal will “at least spark a dialogue about how to be proactive in keeping beach-goers safe.”
