Melania Trump to likely continue focus on children

Updated

From the national opioid epidemic to the violence of Charlottesville, Melania Trump has spoken out on a number of issues since her husband became president -- and the first lady will soon make an announcement regarding her official agenda.

"The First Lady continues to be thoughtful about her initiatives, and we look forward to announcing something in the coming weeks,” spokesperson Stephanie Grisham told RealClearPolitics.

Talk of Melania Trump ditching her youth-focused efforts picked up last week when she tweeted about and attended a meeting on the opioid crisis alongside her husband, President Trump. Grisham, though, insists that Melania will continue to focus on children.

"As for details of that 'something,' it is safe to say that Mrs. Trump is very focused on the health and well-being of children," Grisham added.

The first lady has made a concerted public effort to fit in time with children at events both foreign and domestic since entering her White House role. From reading with children at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll to visiting with students at multiple schools, Melania Trump appears set on addressing the needs of children from varying backgrounds. Even while abroad during her lengthy foreign trip with President Trump, she stopped by both Queen Fabiola University Hospital in Brussels and Bambino Gesu in Rome where she snapped photos and visited with sick children. She also separately stopped by to greet children at Necker Hospital in Paris when the first couple visited France to celebrate Bastille Day.
