Here’s what Trump thinks is the greatest threat to the world

President Trump has called nuclear weapons the world's "greatest threat."

He made the comment during a press briefing Thursday when a reporter asked him about his nuclear posture and priorities.

Trump said, "I know that President Obama said global warming is the biggest threat. I totally disagree. I say that it's a simple one: Nuclear is our greatest threat worldwide. Not even a question, not even close. So I'd like to de-nuke the world. I would like Russia and the United States and China and Pakistan, and many other countries that have nuclear weapons, get rid of them."

But he added, "...until such time as they do, we will be the most powerful nuclear nation on Earth by far."

Trump's remarks were made as tensions with North Korea have intensified.

The U.S. president added to the rhetoric Wednesday when he tweeted, "My first order as President was to renovate and modernize our nuclear arsenal. It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before...Hopefully we will never have to use this power, but there will never be a time that we are not the most powerful nation in the world!"

However, critics have since questioned the validity of the statement; according to FactCheck.org, "There is an ongoing modernization of the U.S. nuclear weapons program, but it was initiated under Obama, not Trump."

The effort is expected to take at least 10 years to complete.

Trump began talking about nuclear weapons even before he took office, tweeting in December, "The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes."
