In a statement to CBS News' Paula Reid, Sessions says he is "in contact" with Justice Department agents and state officials, and that the Department Of Justice will quote "continue to support our state and local officers on the ground in any way possible. We stand united behind the president in condemning the violence in Charlottesville and any message of hate and intolerance."

Authorities say one person was killed and 19 injured at the "Unite the Right" rally after a car plowed through a group of counter-protesters who were demonstrating against white nationalists who are upset over the removal of Confederate symbols.

NBC News reports witnesses saw a gray Dodge Charger build up speed and ram the crowd and hit several people before plowing into another car.

The driver was later arrested.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has declared a state of emergency, but despite this clashes continue on the street.
