Newt Gingrich defends Mitch McConnell from Trump attacks

"It was a collective failure."

That's what former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said of the Senate Republicans' failure to pass a scaled-down Obamacare repeal and replace measure.

Gingrich said on "Fox & Friends" Thursday that President Trump should also share some of the blame, saying, "He's part of the leadership team, he's not an observer sitting up in the stands. He's on the field."

President Trump criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on both Wednesday and Thursday.

This after McConnell said Trump has "excessive expectations" of moving his agenda through Congress.

In one tweet, Trump said, "Senator Mitch McConnell said I had 'excessive expectations,' but I don't think so. After 7 years of hearing Repeal & Replace, why not done?"

In recent weeks, McConnell has come under fire from some Republicans following his failed efforts to push through the health care bill.

The House passed its version in May.
