Former NFL coach under fire for his ranking of 10 best quarterbacks since 1978

In the history of professional quarterbacks, Peyton Manning has the most touchdown passes. Aaron Rodgers has the highest passer rating. Tom Brady has the most Super Bowl rings.

But who's the best player overall?

There's a lot to consider when making your pick for Greatest Of All Time -- GOAT, for short. Lucky for us, ESPN put together an all-star panel of NFL icons to decide once and for all: Who is the best quarterback of the modern era?

A group of 10 NFL coaches and executives all submitted their votes for their top quarterbacks since 1978 -- but the selection process was not as unanimous as you'd believe.

Tony Dungy, a former coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts, shocked many by putting New England Patriots quarterback (and longtime Colts nemesis) Tom Brady sixth on his list.

Brady's greatness has long been a topic of debate, but he was ranked either first or second on every ballot aside from Dungy's.

Media outlets and fans -- especially those from New England -- were quick to point fingers, wondering if Dungy was biased due to the Patriots' success against the teams he coached.

That was not the case, ESPN Senior Writer Mike Sando pointed out. Rather, Dungy approached his ballot from the angle of a defensive coordinator and placed his votes based on the quarterbacks who are the toughest to prepare for.

That gave him a top three of John Elway, Steve Young and Aaron Rodgers.

Despite the disagreement, five-time Super Bowl champion Brady came in atop the GOAT list even without Dungy's vote. You can see the full list via ESPN here.
