Tapwrit wins 149th running of the Belmont Stakes

Tapwrit won the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes in Elmont, New York, on Saturday, beating out Irish War Cry, who had emerged as the betting favorite ahead of the final Triple Crown event.

Tapwrit, trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by jockey Jose Ortiz, pulled ahead of Irish War Cry during the final stretch of the 1.5-mile race, knocking the leader into second place.

Patch, a one-eyed horse, finished the race in third place.

Odds for the 2017 Belmont Stakes:

The Belmont Stakes is the third event in the Triple Crown, which also includes the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

Each year, 12 horses and jockeys compete in the Belmont Stakes in hopes of winning the $800,000 top prize.
