$500 million opium poppy field accidentally found in North Carolina

Police in North Carolina disovered a field of poppy plants that is worth an estimated value of $500 million dollars.

According to Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid, there was only one other opium poppy field found this year in the United States, which was in California.

The acre of opium poppies were planted in rows, much similar to those of corn, in an area behind the home of resident Cody Xiong.

"One of our narcotics investigators came to the house looking for something else. When he knocked on the door, the guys said 'I guess you're here about the opium,'" the sheriff told AP.

Reid said Xiong was arrested and charged with two felonies of manufacturing drugs and trafficking opium.

He is out on a $45,000 bail. It is unclear if he has a lawyer.
