President Trump slams Robert Mueller's DOJ appointment as greatest 'witch hunt' in American history

President Trump sounded off on the ongoing inquiries and investigations into ties between his campaign and Russia on Thursday morning, saying the probes mark the "single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history."

"With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel appointed!" Trump stated during his usual morning Twitter session.

The president's fiery tweet comes after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller as a special prosecutor to oversee the FBI's investigation into allegations of collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and Russia on Wednesday.

Trump's Thursday rhetoric differs from what a senior White House official told Reuters on Wednesday evening. According to the official, Trump calmly told his team "We are all in this together," after hearing news of Mueller's appointment. Trump later said in a statement after the Justice Department announcement he looked forward to a quick resolution.

"As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity," Trump said.

Mueller said in a statement tweeted by CBS News: "I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability."
