Melania Trump celebrated Mother's Day with Barron while Donald Trump played golf

Donald Trump wished his wife, Melania Trump, a "wonderful" Mother's Day on Twitter, but the pair spent the holiday apart.

The first lady stayed home with their 11-year-old son, Barron, while the president went golfing at his own Loudon County Trump National Golf Club in Washington, D.C.

According to Vanity Fair, this was his 21st visit to a golf course since becoming president and his first since the controversial firing of FBI Director James Comey.

A spokeswoman for the Trumps told the Washington Examiner that Melania Trump was "spending the day with her family."

She tweeted a Mother's Day message to commemorate the day:

The narrative about the marriage of Donald and Melania Trump shared by Vanity Fair, the Washington Post and other media outlets portrays the first lady as a wife who endures humiliations at the expense of her selfish husband.

The allegations, which the Trump family has refuted through a spokesperson, further characterize Melania Trump as a reluctant billionaire's wife who only aspired to be a mother, not a political figure.

That's allegedly why she was slow to take up her responsibilities as first lady, and why she has stayed in New York City with Barron rather than moving to Washington, D.C., to be with her husband.

The White House says that this arrangement is only temporary, and once Barron finishes the school year they will both move into the Executive Residence.

Bloomberg News reports that the president said Barron has been admitted to a "good school in Washington," which is reportedly St. Andrew's Episcopal School in suburban Maryland.

Though the first lady and the president celebrated Mother's Day separately, they appeared together on Friday at the White House for a Mother's Day celebration for military spouses. They smiled and even shared a kiss.

Melania Trump shared her own remarks about being a mother at the event, the Washington Post reports.

"As everyone in this room knows, mother is a title that claims your heart and changes your life forever," she said. "In fact, it has been said that having a child means allowing your heart to walk around outside of your body. For the mothers of someone who has or is serving our country, this must be especially true."
