Utah Senator Mike Lee wants an Obama nominee to head up the FBI

Utah Senator Mike Lee called on President Trump to nominate Merrick Garland to replace James Comey as FBI director.

Garland was President Obama's nominee to the Supreme Court last year. Republicans in Congress refused to give Garland a hearing or a vote, which paved the way for Trump to nominate Neil Gorsuch who eventually filled the seat.

Mike Lee supported that strategy, which angered Democrats.

A spokesman for Lee says the senator wasn't joking about making Garland the head of the FBI, saying Garland is more than qualified and has the reputation that can restore confidence in the FBI.

President Trump fired James Comey on Tuesday.

The person picked to replace the former FBI director will be in charge of the investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
