Substitute teacher fired after allegedly ripping hijab from student's head

A substitute teacher was fired from his job at Public School 76 in the Bronx, New York after allegedly ripping the hijab off of a second-grader's head.

According to the New York Daily News, the incident occurred on May 2.

For reasons that are not entirely clear, the teacher told the 8-year-old student to remove her hijab, reports News 12 Bronx. The media outlet notes that according to police "...the teacher forcibly removed the hijab, scratching the student's eye in the process."

The girl was taken to an area hospital to be examined, notes the Gothamist. A doctor determined that no permanent damage was done.

The father of the student said he is absolutely stunned by the teacher's action.

He told the New York Daily News, "I didn't expect a teacher to do that to a child. She's OK right now."
