Trump has spent a quarter of his first 100 days at Mar-a-Lago

On Saturday, Donald Trump will mark his 100th day as president of the United States. In those three-plus months, his administration has experienced numerous setbacks, controversies and shakeups, chief among them the initial failure to repeal and replace Obamacare, which Trump promised on the campaign trail would be "so easy." Luckily for President Trump, he has been able to blow off steam at his Florida resort and numerous golf courses around the country, where he has spent an unprecedented amount of time and taxpayer dollars.

Reports detailing Trump's weekends away from the White House show that the president has spent 25 days, or a quarter of his first 100 days, at his oceanside Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, with an additional five days spent at other Trump Organization properties, including golf courses.

While not all of that time was spent at leisure, with several meetings and working meals scheduled, Trump promised during his campaign that he would "rarely leave the White House because there's so much work to be done." Instead, he has spent more time golfing and away from the White House than Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton combined during their first 100 days. Neither presidents Bush nor Obama set foot on a golf course during their first 100 days, while President Clinton played three rounds during that period of his presidency.

The inordinate amount of time the president has spent on his golf courses stands in sharp contrast to his past criticism of Obama's golfing habit. Since 2012, Trump has tweeted 14 times about Obama playing golf, but has himself played at least 14 rounds since taking office.

When recently pressed on the apparent hypocrisy, Trump's second-oldest son, Eric, defended his father's golf habit as a means of fostering relations with world leaders, business people and political partners. For his predecessor's part, Obama played 333 rounds of golf during his time in office, or 11 percent of his total 2,920 days in office. If Trump keeps up at his current rate, he will have spent 14 percent of his term on the links.
