Trump doubles down on Twitter that 'Mexico will be paying' for border wall

Updated

President Trump continues to insist that Mexico will be paying for his controversial border wall while criticizing Democrats for not being receptive to allocating money in the proposed budget for the project.

On Sunday morning, he tweeted, "The Democrats don't want money from budget going to border wall despite the fact that it will stop drugs and very bad MS 13 gang members."

He then followed up with another message which read, "Eventually, but at a later date so we can get started early, Mexico will be paying, in some form, for the badly needed border wall."

Mexican officials have repeatedly stated otherwise with the country's foreign secretary Luis Videgaray reiterating in early April that "Mexico will not collaborate in any way in the construction of a possible wall," reports the Dallas Morning News.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio also commented in a recent ABC's 'This Week' interview that "Mexico's not going to pay for the wall."

Despite Trump's reported insistence that funding for the project be included in the federal spending bill, CNN reports, based on an inside administration source, that "the White House would not let the government shut down over the issue."

Lawmakers have until Friday to pass at least an interim budget to avoid a government shutdown.
