Family claims teen was denied lung transplant because of pot use
A 19-year-old boy from Utah claims he was denied a spot on the lung transplant list for having pot in his system.
KSL reports Riley Hancey, an active teen who runs, bikes and skis, smoked pot over Thanksgiving with friends.
Shortly after, Hancey got the flu which then turned into pneumonia.
BuzzFeed News reports that within days he was on life support at University of Utah Hospital where doctors told him they wouldn't put him on the transplant list because he had tested positive for THC.
According to BuzzFeed, the United Network for Organ Sharing has no regulations regarding transplant lists and the use of medical or recreational marijuana, leaving hospitals responsible for the decision.
Hancey and his family started looking for other hospitals with different policies on THC use.
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania agreed to take the Utah teen's case.
A YouCaring page was set-up to help offset the bills and Riley is now recovering with new lungs.
