Dallas Mavericks to honor Tony Romo with player 'for a day' treatment

After announcing his NFL retirement and transition to sports broadcasting, longtime Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is set to join another Dallas team.

For a day, that is.

According to ESPN's Mark Stein, the Dallas Mavericks will honor Romo during their final home game on Tuesday night by making him a "Maverick for a day."

According to ESPN.com's sources, the Cowboys star will spend the game on the bench and in uniform as a way of paying tribute to Romo's 14 seasons spent in Dallas.

The Dallas Mavericks are currently 32-47, and will end their season without a playoff berth. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban had said multiple times recently that the team was looking to add a "pass-first point guard" before season end -- a line sources now say was in reference to Romo's addition to Tuesday's bench.

Romo did play high school basketball in Wisconsin, but sources say this "Maverick for a day" treatment wouldn't have been considered if the NBA team was not already out of playoff contention.
