Babysitter accused of burning 6-month-old's feet for 'crying too much'

Maryland authorities launched an investigation on Monday into claims that a babysitter burned a crying infant's feet with a frying pan.

Police charged Ismelda Ramos-Mendoza, 36, with child abuse in connection to blisters, burns and swelling found on the soles of a 6-month-old's feet after being placed in her care.

Hospital staff contacted police after the child's parents sought medical attention for the severe burns she received while under Ramos-Mendoza' supervision, Detective Cpl. Charles Earle told the Washington Post.

Ramos-Mendoza said it was possible that the infant's feet "rubbed across a tortilla" during a questioning with investigators Monday, said Earle.

She later confessed to purposely burning the baby's feet after becoming frustrated with the baby "crying too much."

"Out of frustration, she placed the baby's feet on the grill or pan she was cooking tortillas on," said Earle.

After her confession, Earle says police took Ramos-Mendoza into immediate custody and is now being held without bond.

The child is receiving treatment for her burns at the Children's National Medical Center, where she has been reportedly hospitalized for several days.

Police are also opening investigations with other children that Ramos-Mendoza may have harmed while under her supervision.
