Students pull off sweet surprise for substitute teacher battling cancer

EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) - Choir students from Heartland Middle School visited a substitute teacher who's battling cancer and sang a special set of songs for him.

Larry Jackson is usually seen around the halls of Heartland Middle School in Edmond. He's known for sharing valuable life lessons with the students when he works as a substitute teacher.

Since late February, Jackson has been home facing a battle with terminal cancer.

"What he's shown the students over the last semester is that it's important to fight and to be there for the people you love and do what you love as you fight," Angela McKenna, who teaches choir at Heartland, said.

So, McKenna took some of her choir students to pay Jackson a special visit.

"The main goal for today is to spread joy and to show our children how to show love and to reach out with the talents they've been given," McKenna said.

Jackson said the performance brightened his day.

"The Lord only gives us so much time on this earth and he gives us the ability to achieve what we can," Jackson told NewsChannel 4.

He said he considers being able to touch these childrens' lives one of the greatest achievements of all.

"I'm just glad that we can give back to him because he's given back to us," Abigail Cotner, an 8th grade student, said.

"I love them with all my heart. I wish I was 25 years younger and could be with them again," Jackson said.

Heartland Middle School has a page on their website featuring Jackson, honoring him for all he has done for the students.
