Trump's weekend golf trip sparks outrage from reporters and critics

Updated

President Donald Trump has joined the ranks of many of his predecessors in his first few weeks in the White House as he hit the golf course, but his outings this past week sparked a bigger than usual uproar.

The first wave of reactions came Saturday when the White House reported that Trump was spending the day in meetings, only to have evidence emerge suggesting that he was on the golf course.

Trump was spotted at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia wearing cleats and a sporty shirt on Saturday, prompting reporters to criticize the White House for inaccurately reporting the president's whereabouts.

Josh Billinson of the Independent Journal shared a photo showing Trump clearly dressed for the links, setting off a flurry of comments.

FOX News also became a target of criticism the next day after the outlet tweeted a news alert that Trump was "spending weekend working at the White House."

Critics harpooned the outlet over the report, calling the claim, "fake news."

While many believe that all presidents deserve the opportunity to golf as a form of relaxation from the stresses of the Oval Office, Trump critics have been quick to call the president out for hypocrisy on the matter.

Both Trump and White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer criticized former President Barack Obama for golfing too frequently while he was in office.

One of Trump's many tweets on the matter sarcastically criticized Obama for his "nice work ethic" after he hit the links ahead of a vacation.

Trump has golfed at least 13 times since taking office, according to CNN.
