March Madness ranked as the third-largest killer of office productivity

By Troy Frisby, Buzz60

March Madness isn't just clogging up your Twitter feed. It might also be making office workers worse at finishing things than George R.R. Martin.

More than 400 managers and HR professionals were polled about tech-related distractions in the workplace and, according to USA Today, March Madness was the third biggest time-suck after texting and Facebook.

Not only is it one of the most popular time-wasters, it's also really effective at keeping work from getting done -- 30 percent of respondents called March Madness a "major" office diversion.

Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas estimates more than $2 billion could be lost over the course of the tournament.

That said, employers shouldn't try to ban the Madness. It might only make things worse.

Instead, they should embrace it and see if they can turn it into a team-building exercise -- one where everyone can share a good collective cry over their busted brackets. Thanks, Wisconsin!
