West Virginia botches final possession, Gonzaga advances to Elite Eight

Updated

Gonzaga is back in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015 after West Virginia blew a chance to tie the game.

No. 1 seed Gonzaga is headed to the West Region final after surviving a back-and-forth affair versus No. 4 seed West Virginia. The Bulldogs defeated the Mountaineers 61-58.

Jordan Matthews hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with under a minute remaining for Gonzaga, and West Virginia was unable to score for the remainder of the game.

It was a rough shooting night for both teams, with Gonzaga shooting 41 percent and West Virginia shooting a putrid 27 percent.

There were a lot of fouls and a lot of stoppages, and the last possession of the game is probably the best example of just how out-of-rhythm the game was. It's...bad.

A lot of dribbling for a whole lot of nothing. The Mountaineers couldn't even get the final shot off.

Gonzaga will face the winner of the Xavier-Arizona contest in the regional final on Saturday.
