Former Vice President Joe Biden blasts Trump administration's 'romance with Putin'

Updated

Former Vice President Joe Biden has called the Trump administration's relationship with Russia "a romance."

In a video tweeted by Newsday's Emily Ngo from Washington, DC, Biden can be seen on Wednesday telling reporters, "The notion that there's still this romance with Putin...I'm told...that the secretary of state has decided to go and visit Putin before he goes to the NATO conference? What in the hell are we doing?"

His comments, made after a Democratic rally against the Republicans' proposed health care plan, referenced a report that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was planning to skip a NATO meeting of foreign ministers set for early April.

According to a CNN report, "Tillerson's decision to miss his first NATO meeting but visit Russia a week later plunged his department into damage control, frustrated allies and left analysts scratching their heads."

During the campaign, Trump was dismissive of NATO, but his administration has since voiced its commitment to the organization, even announcing that the president himself would attend a NATO meeting in May.
